Kershaw First To Reach 100Ks, With Only Five Walks

May 31, 2016 6:32 AM

Add another accomplishment to Clayton Kershaw's growing collection, this one of a historical nature.

When the Dodgers' staff ace struck out his fifth batter Sunday night against the Mets, it gave him 100 strikeouts with just five walks. It is the first time in modern history a pitcher has reached the 100-strikeout plateau with only five walks.

Chris Sale Defends Robin Ventura

May 31, 2016 3:32 PM

Three weeks ago, the White Sox had a six-game lead in the AL Central Division. They woke up Sunday in third place, listening to cries for manager Robin Ventura's head.

Ace Chris Sale wants that talk to stop.

"I don't think he gave up any runs," Sale said. "I don't think he made any errors, and he's in the dugout the whole time. It's on us to win games. I understand people -- I'll keep it that -- want to point fingers and find blame. But at the end of the day it falls on the players. We have to find a way to turn it around. We're going to keep fighting. It will turn. We have too much morale, chemistry and too much talent. Just a rough patch."

Salvador Perez Out 7-10 Days With Quad Injury

May 30, 2016 1:20 PM

Royals catcher Salvador Perez is expected to be out seven to 10 days with a bruised left thigh after colliding with rookie third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert while catching a foul popup on Saturday.

Perez's MRI confirmed the injury was a contusion and there was no structural damage.

"Hopefully it's not going to require a trip to the DL," Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday. "We're hoping he'll be back in seven to 10 days. It could be earlier or later. We'll just have to wait and see and just manage it day to day."

Dodgers Send Julio Urias Back To Triple-A

May 29, 2016 11:27 PM

One day after becoming the first teenage starting pitcher in over a decade, the Dodgers sent Julio Urias back to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers' top prospect, and widely regarded as the top prospect in all of baseball, lasted just 2 2/3 innings against the Mets on Friday. In making his debut, he became the first pitcher to start a major league game before his 20th birthday since Felix Hernandez in 2005.

To take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers selected the contract of right-handed reliever Casey Fien from Oklahoma City on Saturday.

Yu Darvish Wins First Start Since 2014

May 29, 2016 11:28 PM

Yu Darvish hit 98 mph in the first inning of his first start in the majors in almost 22 months.

Texas catcher Bobby Wilson is just glad he wasn't running to the backstop after that pitch, and a few others early in the Rangers' 5-2 inter-league win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It was the Japanese right-hander's return from last year's Tommy John surgery Saturday night.

May 29, 2016 11:28 PM

Payback for an aggressive slide during last October's NLDS, if that's what it was, cost the Mets their ace.

Noah Syndergaard was ejected by plate umpire Adam Hamari from Saturday night's game against the Dodgers in the third inning for throwing a 99 mph fastball behind NLDS villain Chase Utley.

May 29, 2016 11:27 PM

The Blue Jays placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right quadriceps strain.

Tulowitzki missed two straight games earlier this week with soreness in his quad before returning to the lineup for Friday's victory against the Red Sox.

But Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters that the five-time All-Star aggravated the injury Friday and was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday.

Julio Urias Departs Early In Debut

May 29, 2016 11:27 PM

The first teenage starter in 11 years failed to get through three innings Friday, when Dodgers rookie Julio Urias departed after 2 2/3 innings against the Mets.

But the short outing mattered little to Urias.

"I'm not going to lie. When I went out there, I started thinking of everything I had to go through to get here," he said, speaking through a translator after the Dodgers' 6-5 loss.

"I will never forget everything that happened in this game because this is the happiest day of my life."

Red Sox Move Clay Buchholz To Bullpen

May 29, 2016 11:27 PM

Clay Buchholz's early-season struggles have cost him his spot in the Red Sox starting rotation.

Boston manager John Farrell announced today that the veteran right-hander will be moved to the bullpen, with Eduardo Rodriguez scheduled to step into the rotation and start Tuesday against the Orioles.

"This is something that's been done for a lot of years. A starter scuffles, they go to the bullpen to work things out. That's what we're doing with Clay," Farrell said.
